LOST: DOCUMENTS and MANAGED PREFERENCES

Haven't seen this on the list in a long time...not necessarily looking for a
solution, but rather to info share. Sorry for the long post. This is a case
of "I never thought it would happen to me!"

Yesterday we had a Mac Manager server that lost User folders, not just the
Documents folder, but all associated folders with the account (The root user
folder which includes the Docs, Preferences, Favorites, Apple Menu Items,
etc.). Funny thing is that it wasn't all users from the workgroup, just the
first half of the alphabet (A-L). I know that sounds exactly like a human
error, but the people who have access to the entire volume were not around
during the time the User folders disappeared. Servers are in a protected
room.

Did someone figure out the password to the server? Possibly, but we don't
allow Chooser access and our login name and password are not easy to
remember. But even more strange is that all of my Managed Preferences in the
Managed Preferences folder are gone too - not the root folders that store
the prefs, just the prefs inside! If it was human error or someone who
cracked the login/password, why would they only trash half of the User's
files and then manually go into each Managed Preferences folder to delete
files? Wouldn't it have been faster to trash the entire Managed Preferences
folder - and why trash Managed Prefs anyway?

Checking the MM Admin activity report tells nothing except approved
activity.

I know this issue has come up before and that Apple has verified this to be
true, BUT only if you use third party network cards (not sure which brand).
However, all of our systems are straight out of the box. I have seen a case
where a User's Documents folder had become invisible. Just using ResEdit to
make the Docs folder visible again fixed the problem, but it hasn't
resurfaced. My current missing files are not invisible, just gone. I know
deleting user accounts from MM Admin will ask you if you want to delete
associated user files on the server, but all of my user accounts still exist
in MM.

Majority of our clients (about 170 stations) are 9.0.4 with about 15
stations on 8.1, 8.6.
MM authentication server is a G4 running ASIP web and file 6.3.3 (serves 2
sharepoints as well)
Additional Documents server is a G4 running ASIP web and file 6.3.3 also.
(DOCS WERE LOST ON THIS SERVER)

Ran DFA, DiskWarrior, NDD, Virex. All clean.

Backups? Who has had time to run backups? Well, I do now.

I wish this was human error because then I wouldn't have to worry this might
happen again!

Insight? Want to share your experience with this?
