Further information on this

I can not create a new image (-5000 error).

I can convert an *existing* image;
although if I convert to read/write format, a
:Users: folder is added at root level <sigh>.

I've had no replies on this so I'm off to http://bugreport.apple.com/
and http://macmgr.com/ to file bug reports.
