AppleWorks 5 XTND's

I am aware of the tech document which says remove the XTND Translator List
from the Preferences folder but that is not working. Problem is in 2
areas: OS 9 and OS 8.x . In 9, you can go into the User Preferences and
delete the XTND which is a pain but can be done. The 8.x machines - the
XTND sits on the machine and only with System access can I dump the XTND.
The machines with 8.x don't have enough memory for OS 9 so I am in a
crunch. I heard there is an AppleScript that will do all of this but I
can't locate it or create it. Any answers, omnipotent Mac gurus?
