"Network Trash Folder" and "Temporary Items"

How-D!

This is an off-shoot of the ListServ Thread dealing with PhotoShop Version 5
and Error -5000

I noticed over the past few weeks some people were complaining about an error
"-5000" that PhotoShop generates when used with MM. I had e-mailed those
people I noticed directly. Here is that e-mail I sent. I hope some of you
find it helpful :)

Also, if you have the error -5000 message coming from other programs, this
could also resolve the problem. (For example, Kid Pix Deluxe and PhotoDeluxe).

Applying this "fix" will also resolve the problem were MM Users try to place
files in the "Trash" and get that message of "...delete this immediately...".

Til the next time....

How-D!

I had a similar problem with PhotoShop LE 4.01 and was able to correct the
problem. Maybe my resolution will work with Version 5. Does Version 5 give
an error code of "-5000"? If so, this is the standard error when a program
can not write its "scratch" file. The trick is to figure out "where" the
scratch file wants to be created.

Turns out the way I had created my "Multiple" Home Directory Sharepoints, I
had stopped MM from creating the invisible "Blessed" folders of "Network Trash
Folder" and "Temporary Items". It was the absence of the "Temporary Items"
folder that caused the problem. Some programs like Kid Pix, WiggleWorks and
Photoshop try to access this folder (as a "scratch disk") when saving a file
to the selected volume.

Check your Home Directory Sharepoints, see if you have something similar:

drwxr-x--- 107 root FandS 3594 Jan 18 16:18 .
drwxr-xr-x 9 root unknown 262 Aug 19 2001 ..
drwx---rwx 7 root nobody 264 Feb 22 17:10 Network Trash Folder
drwxrwxrwx 2 root nobody 264 Feb 22 13:09 Temporary Items
drwx------ 6 ablo_c FandS 264 Oct 10 17:18 ablo_c

If the "Temporary Items" directory is missing, you can not just "create" it
yourself. You really need to let the OS do it. To do this, just make the Home
Directory Sharpoint R/W to the "world", log into that Home Directory via
someone's MM Account, log out and return the "world" permissions to its
original setting. This will create the proper "blessed" and invisible directories.

Good Luck!
