OS X home directory question

I haven't spent a lot of time with OS X clients and now I'm learning all
about them...

If I have a user that has a home directory located on a child docs server,
and I try to set automount up for the sharepoint on that child server, it
will only work if I choose the local netinfo db. If I choose the parent
(root) netinfo db, it will appear to save the settings, but the next time I
go in the settings are gone. Huh? (This is OS X Server 10.1.4.)

I guess my question is - what are the exact steps for setting up OS X
Servers (a parent and a child, with user home directories located on the
child) so that an OS X client can authenticate with the parent (ie, the OS X
client is a child of the parent also), and the automount will actually work?

I followed John D.'s directions on page 26 of T&T 7, and they work
perfectly... IF the home directory for the user is also on the parent. If
the home directory for the user is on a child server, it doesn't work.

What am I missing?
