Configuration problem with printers

Hello all

Clients are iMacs running 9.2.2, fully updated and prepared according to the
instructions in the latest Tips & Tricks documents - I'm pretty sure I
haven't missed anything here. The server is an Xserve running 10.1.5. (I'm
still waiting for my 10.2 upgrade.)

I've only been working with MM since I got my Xserve about 4/5 weeks ago,
but I'm reasonably happy with most of it. However, I'm having a big problem
trying to configure Workgroups/Printers to make "Members use printer
selected in System Access". It seems to be totally failing to function as
described in either the OSXS manual or the most recent Tips & Tricks.

Here's what I'm finding...

1) When logged in under System Access, I create the desktop printers which
are available in that particular lab, all previous traces being removed.
(Our main lab has 4 laser printers, the secondary lab has three and the
other two have one each.)

2) I log out and back in as plain ordinary User A. There are now no desktop
printers showing up.

3) Log out and back in as User A again. This time all the desktop printers
EXCEPT for the default appear on User A's desktop.

4) Log out and back in as User A again - same.

5) Log out and this time log in as User B and there are no desktop printers
at all.

6) Logout and back in as User B again and it's the same. The same for any
other user in fact.

7) Log out and back in under System Access and the default desktop printer
is sitting there on the desktop.

If I go into the "Users" folder at the top level of the hard disk, I will
find the non-default printers in User A's "Desktop Folder" folder. These
seem to remain there after stage 3 above.

If I repeat the above process with only a single desktop printer set up,
nobody ever sees any printers at all, unless logged in under System Access.

I have been trying this with all the workgroups set to print this way, so I
haven't been inadvertently using a user with a list of authorised printers.

Can anyone explain what's going wrong here (and possibly prevent my nervous
breakdown!!)? This is the last major hurdle to being able to roll out an
image via ASR and I desperately need it solved as soon as possible.

Many thanks for taking the time to read this.

bfn
