lookupd question?

We have a problem here at the university.

We use LDAP auth. Everything works great, except, that if the machine
freezes while a user is logged on. Then we do forced restart, nobody can
login to the machine for anywhere from 10-20 minutes.

The local admin user can login, but not a user being authenticated by LDAP.

After 10-20 minutes logins on the box resume.

I was headed down the path of disabling lookupd's cache, as this is where
the LDAP auth info is stored.

Can anyone give me any pointers as to how to go about doing this, or am I
completely off base?

If I am wrong any suggestions on how to clear the problem of no one being
able to login for 10-20 minutes.
