The AD Plug in does support password expiration. It doesn't tell you until the password is actually expired, but it does allow you to reset the password at that time. If it's not working for you there are other issues at play.

In my experience, the login will just fail. Further, if users don't
know their password and the account policy is set to lock after three
tries, they will get no notification that their account is locked - it
will just continue to fail until someone suggests unlocking the account.
