Slot-laoding DVD drives--not reading DVDs

Hello, all. I recall a post a few weeks back about slot-loading iMacs
suddenly not being able to read DVD. Here is the issue that has been seen
on multiple systems in the past week:

I have a 450MHz Cube (slot loading CD/DVD ROM) which recently stopped
recognizing DVD disks. After putting in a DVD, the drive will spit it
out after about 15 seconds. Nothing happens on the computer that I can
see (as in log files). Apple System Profiler identifies the drive
correctly as a CD/DVD ROM. The problem started a while ago (about the
time 10.3.3 came out?). I thought the drive was going bad and ignored
the problem.

However today a friend came by asking about the same problem. He has a
G3 iMac Slot-Loading CD/DVD ROM. So I took out another G3 Slot-Loading
(400MHz) iMac from the closet, put on 10.3.4 and have the same problem^?
all DVD's (video or data) are ejected after 15 seconds. My friend
cannot install iLife on his iMac as the CD says to insert the DVD, but
the DVD won't read.

I then installed 10.2.8 on my test 400MHz iMac and still have the same
problem. Did the DVD player die on these computers or is it software?
Of the three slot-loading CD-DVD ROM computers I have, all of them have
the same problem so I consider it less likely it is hardware....

Any help or insight would be appreciated.

Thank you,
Vince
