Yes, this was simply another approach to granting admin access, and one that not enough people are familiar with.

The snap-in doesn't allow for groups. Plus, that would
give the users the ability to unbind the computer's if they wanted to.
Binding and unbinding is something only the IT staff has access to do.


I don't see how that matters when any of these admin users can simply:

sudo rm /Library/Preferences/DirectoryService/*

...and effectively unbind the computer (the account is in AD but the Mac will know nothing about it.

Again, there are at least two feasible explanations:

a) users can only be in 16 groups. This is a limitation of Panther.

b) Those groups can take up to 72 hours to cache in large environments (although I'd though Apple had fixed this..)

This is all covered in great depth in Apple's Directory Services class.
