Re: controlling internet access by time of day

Yes - it depends on your network topology @ home. It sounds more like you want a firewall and may want to look into that approach.

If you just want to take your computer off the network (not really sure of your objective for doing this) you can have a crontask that would ifconfig en0 down; ifconfig en1 down; to turn off the network interface
ifconfig en0 up; ifconfig en1 up; to turn on the interface.

You may want to try that at the Terminal prompt first to make sure it takes the networking down properly and picks it back up properly. I have seen times where the network speed does not sync properly with your network equiptment when you perform those actions.

Alternativly, you can use the "SystemStarter" command to stop and start services - namely the IPSservices if you want. If you just have MACOS X (not Server) you have have limited success with this approach.

Your objective/goal will probably dictate the more appropration action to what you are trying to do.

Hi,

I'm running OS X at home with wireless and lan to a cable modem.

I'd like to turn off internet access at night for the lan and wireless.

can I do something with crontab etc to turn the network on and off?

Thanks,
Dwight
