NetBoot query

X-Serve G5, 10.3.4

I am trying to set my server up to NetBoot. I have tried two images, one from an existing 10.2.8 image with a fixed IP number set in it, and one created from a 10.3 Master CD set. All required services, including access to the network central DNS server are reported as being 'OK'.

On an attempt to 'N' boot. there is some kind of recognition by the server that a client is trying to connect, but the 'world' icon keeps flashing on the client and nothing more happens. One iMac LCD client tested never gets anywhere at all, another times out and boots on the hard drive after a while.

I have no idea what is going on, but...

Question:

What determines how the clients pick up their IP number?

a) If the CD original is used is the image automatically set to use DHCP?

b) If an existing image is used, is the network setting changed at some point? If not why doesn't the manual say anything about the network settings required of disk images?

Any clues would be welcome.

TIA
