Re: NetBoot query

David,

I was never able to get a working NetBoot image from the original Mac
OS X disks (as it asks for). I don't doubt that it's possible, but it
never worked for me. I was, however, able to get a working image with
Carbon Copy Cloner (bombich.com). It has options to create an image
file on the destination disk and to make it NetBootable.

The other thing I know is that your client and server need to be on the
same subnet. When the client is flashing the world icon, it is looking
for and exchanging info with the server. Those exchanges happen over
UDP -- first, a BootP negotiation through which the client acquires an
IP address and, second, a TFTP (Trivial File Transfer Protocol)
negotiation that transfers the initial boot files to the client. Most
routers don't route these UDP packets, so they never make it across
subnets.

With Carbon Copy Cloner and our machines on the same subnet, we started
to see progress.

Once we were able to get our clients to successfully boot from the
server, we contacted our Network Ops office and had them turn on UDP
routing for our subnets. This allowed us to NetBoot our lab machines
on one subnet from the OS X Server in our office on another subnet.

Let me know if you make any progress with this.
