If both network interfaces have addresses on the same subnet then your
traffic "should" go out the top checked port. If the interfaces are on
different subnets then any traffic destined for the local subnets will
be sent out the appropriate interface. Traffic destined off-network
will go to the default route (which tracks the top checked port).

They are both checked, and in the order Ethernet, Airport. I did
think at one time if that the system worked if one wasn't available that the
next port would become active, but that doesn't happen.

It should "just work".

Does it matter which location is set or has to be the "Automatic" one ??,
as I have created locations depending where I am. The last time I tried this
was for 10.1, maybe its better for 10.2.1 now, I will give it another try.

We don't do anything to switch from one network location to another. If the currently selected "location" has multiple network services enabled then we'll do our best to configure & use them as you have requested (assign/acquire addresses, set the default route, update the network routing tables, ...).
