This raises the question of why the Network prefs panel gets it right and my code doesn't. Can you send me the output of "ioreg -l" for your machine with the modem attached and I'll try to work out what's going wrong and fix my code.

I have similar problems with a drayTek miniVigor 128.
The network panel says "usbmodem-port" in 10.1.5 and "usbmodem" in 10.2.1.
MoreSCF says USB TA Port.
