Answers on weird spam issue

Fellow listers, yesterday I asked for insights regarding a weird spam
issue that cropped up on our mail server running QuickMail Pro under the
"classic" Mac OS. Several of you graciously responded with sympathy and
suggestions for dealing with the problem, which I've done by blocking the
IP addresses of the spammers at our firewall (Nothing like combing through
24 hours worth of mail logs to make your day, eh?). Although the case in
point doesn't directly relate to OSXS, since it *is* mail-related, I
thought you might be interested in the response I got this morning from
the fine folks at CE Software, publisher of QM Pro:

The virus is called Klez and it's ugly. Mostly what it does is send
messages with blank message text that has the virus attached as a .scr,
.pic, etc. It gets the Senders address from the address book on the
infected machine.
It also mimics an SMTP server on the senders machine as evidenced by
"Received: from $DOMAIN by cornelius.groupd.com with SMTP (QuickMail Pro
Server for Mac 2.1); 19-Jun-2002 22:44:10 -0700"

It is extremely difficult to track down the source machine
(PO189.groupd.com) as the name is given by the SMTP mimicing.

What I'd recommend is that you get the Klez fixes available (visit your
favorite virus info site and they should have something there) and run
them on all of your machines.

Sincerely,
Jean
