Re: GPRS/GSM Internet access

Hi Morgan,

If you are using GSM that's how it is. If the connection is good you might
be able to get a roaring 9600, but GSM ends there. Except for HSCSD you
would have 14.4 kbps, but as far as I know this is not offered in the US.

For GPRS you should be able to obtain up to 56 kBps (4 channels downlink,
still 9.6 kbs one channel uplink) or even more if you are able to get more
channels. But getting more channels is currently not very likely and depends
on the provider, your subscription, the cell you're in, the distance to the
cell's center, and the number of other mobiles using the same cell.

To use GPRS you need a phone (with serial/USB/Blue Tooth interface) that
supports GPRS connections and a set of settings for GPRS. Besides you'll
need a SIM that supports GPRS. Most new SIMs have GPRS enabled by default,
tough.

I know his not actually what you need, but I can't give you more details as
my GPRS experience is for Germany and based on Compaq's iPaq and an external
GPRS/GSM expansion jacket.

Cheers,
Horst
