It is very rare that a program would authenticate a user out of
/etc/passwd unless it's a server program. What type of apps are you
talking about?

That's entirely dependant on how they are written. If they hardcode
/etc/passwd and check for usernames in it, then you'll either have to dump
the netinfo user data to /etc/passwd, or modify the program to look
elsewhere (using the netinfo libraries or command line utilities).
