Multimedia Servers and Backup

Dear all:

With this, I am particularly addressing the folks on this list that deal
with severs in publishing and multimedia (i.e. large file sizes, frequent
changes to files on server).

Let's assume we have a number of servers mostly for multimedia-use:

- A production-server with 0.5 TB of storage
- A deployment-server with 0.25 TB
- An admin file-server with 0.125 TB
- A few workstations with a combined volume of 0.1 TB

All of this is to be backed up on tape...

So let's assume that we have a total of 1 TB to back up and that a max. of
20 % of the data changes each day. This translates into 0.2 TB to be backed
up incrementally every night (worst case).

Let's also assume that we have a gig-E network...

So we have 200 Gigs to back up, and we have, say, 100 MB/min backup write
performance (worst case based on the small single-drive setups I'm used to).
That would take about 34 hours - that9s too long!

Now my questions:

- Are my assumptions too conservative (i.e. could I expect higher backup
performance)? If so: how/where?

- What would be the best solution: a dedicated backup server or running the
backup solution directly on the server that faces most changes to files
daily (i.e. the multimedia production-server)?

- If we go the dedicated backup-server with backup over the network, would
it be possible to implement a two-tier scenario where everything is first
backed up to (mirrored) HDs at max. network speed (are a sustained 20 MB/s
realistic for gig-E? That would translate into roughly 70 GB/h - we'd be
done in approx. 3 hours) and later to tape (the tape library could be busy
for the better part of the next 24 hours)?

- Finally, what kind of backup solution (tape library, interface options,
backup software, os, etc.) could be expected to handle this reliably
(ideally without on-site admin)?

- What would you budget for a backup solution like this?

Any info and help from anyone with experience with similar setups would be
highly appreciated!

TIA,

Ron
