Re: Server cost compare



Truely it may not be for everyone. For someone like me that is paying for
co-location rack space, the idea of fitting say 6 or possibly 8 towers into the
same space I could in theory put 30 or 40 Xserves, the cost savings works out
well. Also I can't get onsite warranty with the normal tower. Yes, it remains
to be seen on Apple's IDE drive setup, but I have not had a problem with Sun
X1's (and now Sunfire V100's that have IDE drives though not hot swap...though
Sun charges $250 for a 40gig HD that is not hot swap but you need the tray it
comes with to not void onsite warranty.. fun fun... :)

It all depends on your needs on if it saves you money or not. To some a tower
outfitted like you want might be a better choice for others that have limited
space the Xserve is perfect and the server monitoring helps when dealing with
dozens (or more) of them in a data center as well..
