Re: Server cost compare.... for REAL cost....

Actually.... some numbers look amiss on this comparison. While I admit the tower was nice to give people an option of whether they wanted rack mount or not, the tower, which was basically just a desktop workstation with OSXS installed, was lacking in several areas as a server.

I'm not sure where you get $3679 for the XServe, seeing the Minimum Advertised Price (MAP) that Apple allows the XServe to be sold for is $3999. If you buy it for $3679, prepare to be required to send it to the non-Apple authorized reseller you bought it from for any repair should it ever break.... because it probably won't qualify for Apple Authorized service.

And OS X Server unlimited does not cost $499.... it's $899..... you quoted a 10-user copy.

To custom build a tower server, vs. the Xserve, you would end up paying almost exactly the same to get similar features, plus you don;t get:

1) Hot-swappable drives (I'll take that over SCSI any day.)
2) Dual gigabit ethernet (unless you want to shuck out for yet another add on card to the tower)
3) Headless operation (you don't NEED a monitor on a server!)
4) Serial Port access (IT geeks prefer it)
5) Remote management (sorry, it's not included in the retail boxed OSXS)

The fact that I can't get internal SCSI support in the Xserve is irrelevant to me.... I've been installing IDE hardware RAIDs at my clients for quite some time now, and have never had any problems with IDE drives in a RAID configuration.... in fact the only RAID I ever had problems with was a SCSI unit. The FiberRAID will be IDE as well..... and why not? IDE drives have become increasingly more reliable, and ar far cheaper than SCSI, I can replace an IDE drive TWICE for the cost of a SCSI drive.

Just thought I would let everyone know I just compared the cost of an Apple
G4 Tower to an Xserver.

Well, it seems as thought you can't get the plain jane server anymore! So
upset with no internal SCSI support, I decided I would build my own.

Compared

Tower G4 DP 512MB ram $2203 to Xserve G4 DP 512MB ram 3679.
Tower comes with 80 gb IDE ---- Xserve comes with 60gb IDE
Add ATTO SCSI for $417 ---- Xserve add U160 Card for $180
Add 2 36gb SCSI raid 1 $788 ---- Xserve add 2nd 60 gb IDE $315
Add OSX Server UNL. $499 ---- Xserve comes with UNL. OSXS

Total cost Tower = $3907.00

Total cost Tower = $4174.00
