OpenSSH 3.3p1 on OS X/Lesson Learned

OppenSSH 3.3 was released yesterday. I tonight d/l'd, compiled and installed it on one of my machines (the stepwise instructions still apply..except, of course, for the version numbers).

Immediately after installation, the ssh server on that machine would no longer start. I took a look at the "Allow remote login" (in the Sharing pref pane) check box to find it become unchecked.I checked it, but it unchecked itself as soon as I closed the Sharing pref pane.

I took a look at /etc/hostconfig and SSHSERVER=-YES- was there. Still scratching my head, I then tried sshd from the CLI, and got:

"Privilege separation user sshd does not exist"

OK, so now I'm on to something. The thus far sparse Slashdot discussion on OpenSSH talks about privilege separation being a new feature (for enhanced security). I used NetInfo Manager to create a new user "sshd" and then tried to run sshd again. This time getting:

"Missing privilege separation directory: /var/empty"

OK, so then I created an "empty" directory in /var went back to the terminal, typed sshd...and voila....out of the woods.

Hopefully, this will help somebody else who goes to upgrade to OpenSSH 3.3p1.
