Re: Server cost compare

For a 1u product I believe the Xserve is a good product. The cost
comparison is minimally different and I would easily choose 2 xserves
mirrored at 2U instead of 2 towers in a rack at 12u unless you buy the
marathon conversion box for 600.00 to make it 4u, even the 6u solution from
marathon is 500.00.
On the hard drives I typically have been using IBM servers for SCO or
win2000, we are mostly a UNIX shop, 18,36 gig hot swap hard drives from IBM
are never less than 500.00 and typically run for almost 1000.00. I agree
that as a consumer I would like to have the trays in the box and put my own
ide drives in it, but 500.00 is not bad to pay for a system that is
supportable by having the hardware constant.
The extra that apple has put into Xserve is great, we currently use
intermapper to monitor our most critical networks and an unlimited license
for this product is over 2grand to start and 700 a year for upgrades.
This is my 2 cents, but I have time and time again compared the desktop
with the X-serve and any time I configure it (unless I add 480gig) the Price
difference is negligible.
