Yes, I would suggest this...but this would mean purchasing an extra machine PLUS an extra Terabyte of storage. Since 120GB drives would mean you'd need 9 drives, you would need to go external. And when going external, you may as well get a RAID case...at this point, it becomes a hot spare server. A great alternative on this note would be to use a dual-channel RAID box that would let you connect the file server and the backup server both to the same RAID.

For GigE yes, but not for your average hard drives. You can only go as fast as the slowest link.
