Disabling ssh, remotely - updates

Hi,

How can I disable (for future reference) access to ssh (:22) while logged in remotely?. For example, lets assume the July security patch had not been released and I wanted to turn off access so nobody could connect via ssh until a patch was available?
I saw a guy do this on a RedHat box last week but I didn't take enough notice at the time!

Is it possible to download and install patches via the CLI, remotely. Like, can I install the security patch without being in front of the server?
