Re: LDAP and MacManager 2 1 not AD

Thanks for the confirmation
What are you using for your LDAP server, OpenLDAP or Novell ???

Anybody else, I wonder if this is a know no bug and it will be addressed in the next release for MM2. If that ever happens

Yes this is what happened to me when i tested it during the holidays. Its actually the synchronisation that checks users against the server thats a problem.Users don't exist in netinfo hence they are removed. If you stop it after it verifies the workgroups but before synchronisation it will be ok. I too haven't found this satifactory as a moments inattention could wipe out your users base. While you can import them again you would have to set up the group memberships again. I couldn't imagine frequent db restores as a solution.
Also Samba doesn't know about LDAP so you can't host home directories for Windows machines as well as Mac's. You can however set them up on windows2000 servers for both PC and Mac. Apple won't sell more servers this way.
Also you can't change your password from a MM mac. Also you had to log in with your shortname which we can live with
Once you did a find, i think I could drag and drop them to MM. ( not sure 10 weeks ago now)

So what Needs doing for LDAP and MM to work so students can sit down at a PC or mac and log in and have the same home directory.

1: A way to turn off syncronisation in MM admin

2: A way to change passwords from a MAC. I experimented with AD and ASP and ADSI and feel that a web based way is possible, I might have to write one.

3: Samba needs to know about LDAP so windows clients can log in

4: Apache Web Homepages may not work. I haven't tested this.

Anyway for these reasons I'm not rushing to implement a LDAP server. While I want the kids to have the same Home directories , I'd prefer them to reside on the OSX box, but as I've promised them this next year I will implement it one way or another.
The other way may be a PDC. Samba can be setup that way but I'd like a GUI way of doing it.

Good Luck
Phil

Subject: LDAP and MacManager 2 1 not AD

Question:

I have been able to get LDAP via Novell's Implementation to work
correctly with Macintosh Manager. However to import users You have to
use the Import all function. in the Macintosh Manager application
version 2.1.
However when I verify Users and Groups database under the file menu all
users added from an Ldap server get removed.

Is this correct behavior or a bug

I am running version 10.1.5 no network patch installed yet

I assume I am running the latest version of Macintosh Manager Server,
but I am not sure how to tell . Anybody know how to do that. while I'm
asking questions

Thanks
