Yes, you do. You got to point configure to the location of your library.

./configure --help
gives you all the options.

--with-ssl-dir=PATH Specify path to OpenSSL installation
is what you're looking for.

If that doesn't work out, the description on stepwise on this is still valid
(www.stepwise.com).
