Short name longer than 8 characters?

Hello all:

I9m new to OS X Server and to the list. I just started setting up my server
when I came across something rather disappointing. In the Admin Guide it
says users short names are limited to 8 characters. I9m switching from a
Windows NT server (thank god) and some users need to maintain their email
address9s (their user names are over 8 characters) which they have had for
years and which are used in company stationary. If there is no way around
this it would be totally ridiculous. If there is no way, could I use a mail
server application on top of OS X Server where users can have more than 8
characters and just have the app run my companies email?

Any help, advice, info would be greatly appreciated. I9m looking forward to
any responses.
