Hi,

How can I disable (for future reference) access to ssh (:22) while logged in remotely?. For example, lets assume the July security patch had not been released and I wanted to turn off access so nobody could connect via ssh until a patch was available?
I saw a guy do this on a RedHat box last week but I didn't take enough notice at the time!

But you ain't running RedHat ;-). He could have used one of two ways to accomplish it, depending on how he "told" sshd to run. He could have commented out ssh from inetd.conf, or he could have removed the call to sshd from an "rc" initialization file. However, neither of those would have helped you on OSX(S).

On OSXS, you tell the system that you don't want sshd to run in /etc/hostconfig. Change
SSHSERVER=-YES-
to
SSHSERVER=-NO-

That is read upon boot, so it would be easiest to reboot after that. Otherwise, widen your window and then issue "ps -aux | grep sshd" and kill anything you find there.

However, doing this will shut you immediately out of your system, and you won't be able to do anything again without driving your sorry butt out there.

Is it possible to download and install patches via the CLI, remotely. Like, can I install the security patch without being in front of the server?

Not yet, unless you've got an Xserve.

1) (free) VNC

2) (inexpensive) Timbuktu

3) (if you need it for other things) Apple Remote Desktop
