Re: Gone paranoid: private IP to public IP!!

Hi Juan,
Ignore all the hacker movies you've seen. They are fantasy. There's no such thing as an uber-hacker than can sit down and get into any system in the world.

You're running a Mac, which have been pretty damn secure as long as Ethernet has existed. NO* MacOS-based computer has *EVER* been hacked remotely, when running only Apple-supplied services. NEVER. Ever. period. Apple, and other companies, have run contests and put up reward money for people to try to access Macs that were not behind any firewalls. The only contest where someone claimed to win, it was found out later that he had found out the password from someone "on the inside", and that was how he was able to access the machine.

OSX Server ships in an *extremely* secure state. As it ships, there is not a single vulnerability, as everything is turned off. And the latest update security update (days ago) removes all known exploits from OpenSSH and Apache.

And you mention that the router turns off the "lower" numbered ports. Those are the only ports that exist, really. Anything above 1000 doesn't have an associated program, but are used for programs that you compile yourself (and some things like dynamic ftp data ports).

Relax, get some sleep :-)

Mike
