If you can wait, I would recommend Rumormill (www.swaystairs.com). It was a great MacOS news server for years, and the author (now separated from Stairways) is working at carbonization. He posted an update this month, and has limited functionality under OSX currently.

I'd stay away from any Carbon based "servers" and use a real daemon instead.

That's a ludicrous statement. There's nothing about Carbon that makes an app neither a server, nor a real daemon.

INN is a great package for news under unix.

Yes it is, and I never stated otherwise. However, we're not talking about unix, and we're not talking about unix admins. We're talking about MacOSX Server, which does have a un*x core, but is an whole other beast, and most people on the list are not all too interested in non-Mac-like solutions. INN is most definitely a non-Mac-like solution.

Rumormill is a great package for news under MacOS. It is a "real daemon", as it has 2 applications, an fba, and a config utility. The FBA will be the first thing carbonized and optimized for OSX(S).
