how is the iMac connected to your ISP?

I have a DSL-line and my gateway configured with manual Ethernet and so I
tell the IP.

I think the normal setup for IP related stuff would be the network panel in
the systems preferences.

You can also check your interfaces in a terminal with netstat -a.
