Re: OS X Server on unsupported Mac

Paul,

I'm running OS X Client on a PM7600 with a PowerLogix 400 MHz G3 (1MB
Backside Cache), 500 MB RAM, 40 GB Seagate ATA IV 7200 rpm drive on an ACARD
ATA133 controller, OWC FireWire PCI card and Asante 590 NIC.

I'm using the machine as a router, firewall, web, streaming and file server.
So far, things are going very well. Every once in a long while, I am having
problems with natd, but I ascribe that to the Asante driver - it has caused
problems in similar situations on supported machines before. A reboot has
fixed the problem in all cases. If you need a second nic, try to find one
that doesn't require third-party drivers. Search the list archives for more
info...

Needless to say, you need XPostFacto from OWC to install OS X, OS X Server
or Darwin on an unsupported machine. It works as advertised, and very well
so. Note that you do need an OS 9 partition for troubleshooting purposes
when using XPostFacto. You never know when you'll have to reinstall the
modified kexts and the like after an OS X update, and you can only do so
from OS 9.

I purchased all the additional hardware described above from OWC for two
reasons: they offer excellent deals and I wanted to support their efforts of
making XPostFacto available for free. Their URL is http://www.macsales.com
Disclaimer: I am in no way affiliated with OWC; I am simply a _very_
satisfied customer.

If you need more info, please contact me off-list.

Cheers,

Ron
