How do I password protect a folder for my website?

I want to password protect a folder inside the documents folder of the web server. I used to have this set up under ASIP, and whenever someone would browse to that folder over the internet, they would have to enter a password.

I have not been able to make that work in OS X. I tried using a realm, and it denied access without popping up the password box. Is anyone doing this successfully? Are there any instructions for setting it up?
