Sendmail burden on OS X Server?

I'd like to set up a few cron jobs to monitor things like disk usage on my
OS X servers (running file services & Mac Manager), but am not currently
running mail services on them. My question: Is there any appreciable
performance hit incurred simply by having sendmail running for the sole
purpose of allowing shell scripts to send e-mail with the results of their
execution?

Or is there another--better--way to accomplish the same thing?

Thanks!

Tom
