Microsoft Office 2001 privilege problems

I am having a weird problem with Microsoft Office 2001 running on clients
accessing files on an OSX 10.1.3 server. Microsoft Office will not save
changes to an existing file. The user is the owner of the folder on the
server the file exists in, and the privileges are set to owner having read
and write privileges in the folder. The user can overwrite and delete the
file using the finder, but office will not save on an existing file. Office
will save a new file, but will not update an existing file.

I am at my wits end, and would appreciate any help you may have.
