Re: Soft-RAID and Hard-RAID?

I've set up an ATTO soft-RAID 0 on a 450 mhz G4 ASIP server with two ultra-scsi 3 drives. So far, it's proven pretty reliable, but it's far from an ideal situation.

I've been doing a daily duplicate of the volume to a firewire drive so if catastrophe strikes I can do a quick move of the backup volume to another server. Some work would be lost, but not a major wipeout like having the RAID collapse would be.

I'm wondering if anyone knows of a good duping solution other than Retrospect? I need to have this happen hourly and synchronize all files on the LVD RAID volume to the firewire backup.

While a RAID 5 config may function perfectly well with one drive missing, what do you think will happen if you do so and another drive fails before the RAID system is rebuilt?

the exact same thing that will happen with your RAID 1 if the mirrored drive fails after the primary. You're contrasting RAID1 with RAID5...but BOTH will give you catastrophic, unrecoverable data loss in the instance that you specify.
