I did compile the source as described in
http://www.afp548.com/Articles/Jaguar/proftpd.html

We only connect via Fetch, winnows network neighborhood and web browsers.

And the version is 1.2.7.

It works fine with all above connection, it just will not use the symlinks
to other folders. Even with the user in the members area of the group in
grouptables. Even if the group of the destination folder is the same as the
parent of the homedir, the symlink can not be used.
