It has to do with the way the rc files handle mounting partitions. It's not
really done through /etc/fstab like on most Unices, instead a daemon handles
the mounts. If there is a directory in /Volumes of the same name as what
you're trying to mount, the daemon will create a folder with the same name
and then a number 1. So if I'm trying to mount my FireWire drive which has a
volume name of "taco" and a directory called "taco" exists in /Volumes
already, the automount daemon will mount the partition on "/Volumes/taco 1".
When you shutdown your machine, the automount daemon unmounts these
partitions and then removes the folder. Since your power went out, the
daemon didn't unmount them properly so the folders still existed.
