Ther was a bug that made symlinks not work correctly in 1.2.7

http://bugs.proftpd.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1785

also:

From TJ Saunders on the ProFTPD mailing list:

In short, symlinks _can_ work within a chroot, depending on to where the
link points. If you want something outside the chroot to be visible in
the chroot, then you need to play filesystem games.

this should explain it for you.
