I went through this instructions was able to make install, etc. but logging in doesn't work. Obviously I have missed something...

Yes, and it works fine for me (since I use 1.2.8rc1, 1.2.7 had a strange problem executing STAT commands). Did you check what query ProFTPd sends to MySQL? (you can do so starting it in debug mode by hand with the shell, the parameters are -nd9)
Also a little configuration snippet was nice to see where the problem could be.
