Re: AFP homedirs - do they actually work, and if so, how?

You're missing one piece of the puzzle to get it to work. You need automount records pointing to the afp sharepoints that the user's home directories are contained in. The latest version of the Admin guide for Mac OS X Server has information on how to do this (the cover page should include the line "for version 10.2.3 or later"). Appendix B has information on integrating with Active Directory, but the information is also very useful for any LDAPv3 server.

If you start reading at the end of page 643, you will get an idea of what is going on. And then on 647 there is table of data requirements for the automount records you need to have in the LDAP server. This should get you going.

I'm trying to get an Xserve to integrate with an existing setup (several
Linux boxes authenticating against an LDAP directory), and have finally
succeeded in getting OS X talking to the LDAP directory server. It sees
the users, and now that I've reverted to memberUid-style groups, groups
work as well.

However, I'm trying to get home directories to work. The main Linux
shell system is also running netatalk, with the AFP server enabled, so
TCP and AppleTalk native protocols are enabled and working (and have
been for some time). I've tried grabbing the schema description from the
Xserve, and using that, and then adding the necessary attribute to my
user object to specify the afp:// URL for the homedir to mount, but it
does nothing.

What do I need to do? Or is my only solution to setup NFSv3 on the shell
machine, and export the filesystem so the Xserve can NFS mount it? I'll
do that if that's what it's going to take, but it's not my favorite.
