[Apple List Admin] Re: CHUQ!! Re: Delivery Status Notification (failure)

Hi all,

I just now caught wind of this thread, so forgive the delay in my reply.

The problem of bounces being sent to the mailing list is *not* as a result of mailing list replies being sent to the poster (instead of the list). It is the result of a mail server that is effectively broken or misconfigured to direct bounces to the address listed in the message "Sender" and not "return-path." This configuration violates RFC 2822 and other standards on the Internet that have been accepted for over a decade.

The *only* way to rectify this problem of bounces going to the list is to e-mail a copy of the bounce to email@hidden. As soon as I get wind of a bounce going to the list, I remove the offending user immediately, and quite often ban the domain from further subscription until they fix the problem. Sending a message to the mailing list with CHUQ in the subject line does nothing, particularly considering the fact that Chuq is the architect of the lists.apple.com system at Apple -- the site admin (me) is the person who can better service your request, and I don't read every list on regular basis. The fastest way to get an issue resolved is to send it right to the site admin at email@hidden.

In regards to the directing replies to the list vs. poster, we've had the discussion on several mailing lists ad nauseam. We outline our reasons for doing this in the FAQ. Do NOT continue this discussion on the mailing list in any way at all. It is off topic and bothersome to the 4000 members of this list that seek technical discussion about Mac OS X Server.

Should any of you have any questions, please feel free to contact me directly. Thanks!
