FWIW, we just solved problems with 10.2.3 client machines and a Laserjet 5000n and 1200n by updating the drivers on the clients. There are OS X and OS 9 laserjet drivers that can be found at versiontracker, and assumably at the HP website.

Our problem was similar. The OS X machines would spool the job, but would never claim to get a connection to the printer or would stop at less than half way through sending the first page. They didn't error, and unless you opened up the Print Center and checked, there was no indication that anything hadn't happened. Except that nothing had happened :)

The new drivers fixed it despite the statement that they weren't necessary with Jaguar.

As for your switches, the only way I know to test unmanaged switches is to change them out and see if the problem persists.
