Re: setting host aliases (like /etc/hosts)?

The file is incorrect. In 10.2 it is consulted.

But it's still probably a better idea to put them in netinfo for an out of the box OS X configuration.
You can simply clone one of the 'machine' records using netinfo manager and edit accordingly.
If you're heavily relying on /etc/hosts you might want to adjust the lookup order for better performance.

But the whole point of what Michael pointed out was that this all changed in 10.2, you don't need to adjust the lookup order for better performance. The FlatFile Agent is the first thing to get consulted after the cache, then DNS, then NetInfo, then Directory Services.

[bufffer:~] nigel% lookupd -d
lookupd version 272 (root 2002.07.27 09:40:39 UTC)
Enter command name, "help", or "quit" to exit

<snip>

Dictionary: "Host Configuration"
LookupOrder: Cache FF DNS NI DS
_config_name: Host Configuration

Personally I think the order makes much more sense now. Be nice if the intros were a little less misleading...

[bufffer:~] nigel% cat /etc/hosts
##
# Host Database
#
# Note that this file is consulted when the system is running in single-user
# mode. At other times this information is handled by lookupd. By default,
# lookupd gets information from NetInfo, so this file will not be consulted
# unless you have changed lookupd's configuration.
