RE: Active Directory Authentication and Home Folders

Where can I download configd you don't list a link for it on your page. This looks fantastic. I would really like to be able to not put anything in Active Directory that isn't already there.

Ack thanks for pointing that out. I'll fix it. You nead some private headers from the configd project.

Additionally- note that your case an LDAP bind is taking place each time the user logs in. Without ssl this is fairly easy to sniff (here's the bind packet)

I read your ad.txt summary from your site, and I saw you mentioned this there. So the way around this is to limit the users access to certain data? or use SSL?

The thing about using ssl is that it requires significant headache on the AD side of things.

There are better, less intrusive options. The first step is using kerberos authentication so that LDAP bind authentication isn't required. The next step is making sure that an LDAP bind doesn't happen... which is more complex issue, and the one I'm waiting for.

To turn on kerb auth, first create an edu.mit.kerberos file (this is pretty easy see mine below):
http://kbase.info.apple.com/cgi-bin/WebObjects/kbase.woa/wa/query?searchMode=Assisted&type=id&val=KC.107153

Then you need to turn on kerb authentication for loginwindow:
http://kbase.info.apple.com/cgi-bin/WebObjects/kbase.woa/wa/query?searchMode=Assisted&type=id&val=KC.107154

I wrote a little applescript that does the latter:

There are currently some developments that can make this process a little more secure (without using ssl). I need to wait a couple of days so see if they're appropriate for a public forum though.

I'll be waiting.
