You have a serious problem with virtual memory.

The server has 1 gig of ram and ~70Gb of free diskspace, and was only up for about 2 hours. No one was logged into the server.

Wow, you answered the questions I was going to ask except for
how big is that disk in the first place ? You have 70Gig free of what ?
Have you added or changed RAM since the server came from Apple ?
If you reboot do the messages start again immediately or does it take
an hour or two ?

I'm thinking a bad ram chip.

Possibly, or maybe a bad boot disk. Does Disk Utility find any problems
with it ?
