...and speaking of quickly... tape technologies are just plain SLOW!
I'm sure that this depends on the drive type and tape library. Our backup uses an ADIC (http://www.adic.com) Faststor7 LTO autoloader that packs about 160-180gb on a single tape. Backing up over the network pulls data in at about 500-600mb/minute.
I run two backups per day spanning 5 backup sets, rotated weekly (there have been times when people needed to retrieve information from over a month in the past, and that's why I added another weekly rotation to the backup strategy). Our data needs total over 600GB. The hard drive solution wouldn't really work for us.
