Re: Why an XServe?=Backup strategies

...and speaking of quickly... tape technologies are just plain SLOW!

I'm sure that this depends on the drive type and tape library. Our backup uses an ADIC (http://www.adic.com) Faststor7 LTO autoloader that packs about 160-180gb on a single tape. Backing up over the network pulls data in at about 500-600mb/minute.

yeah, I agree there, it is the stop, rewind, reposition, whatever delays that tape mechanisms insert that add so much latency to the equation. I look at the SNMP network graphs of our tape-based backup server against the drive-based one and the difference is impressive... the tape graph shows buttes, with long wide valleys between them, the drive-based one looks like buttes with narrow canyons between them.

I run two backups per day spanning 5 backup sets, rotated weekly (there have been times when people needed to retrieve information from over a month in the past, and that's why I added another weekly rotation to the backup strategy). Our data needs total over 600GB. The hard drive solution wouldn't really work for us.

heh.... I'm backing up 3 terrabytes of data. Tape solutions don't really work for us. =)

I know my solution/situation is unique... I have risen to the pinnacle of network management: I have a network with 650 servers and only 15 users! =)
