Re: Panther Server

I understand the differences between the two. This functionality existed
in Mac OS X Server 1.2 (I used it all the time) when the windowing system
was still using DPS. And from what I understand, the current windowing
system does not have remote display integrated.

I would also find this feature useful. However, it has been my experience
that a lot of people who use Timbuktu, ARD, or something similar don't
necessarily care about having the whole "desktop experience" on the remote
computer. But rather they just have a need to run a handful of GUI apps
once in a while. And right now ARD or Timbuktu is the only way to do that.

Until someone can come up with X11 equivalents to the necessary Aqua apps,
we don't have much of a choice.

Aaron

Apple needs to sell copies of Remote Desktop.

That's silly, they do two ENTIRELY different things in a similar fashino.

Remote windows ala NSWindows(IIRC)/X11/Citrix/WTS means that you log into a
remote machine, you have your own login. You get windows, applications, etc.
You do not directly affect anyone else logged into that machine, and in
fact, unless you know how to look, you shouldn't know anyone else *is*
logged into that machine. Accounting only for resource limitations, you can
have n users logged into a remote display system, and none of them will know
anyone else is logged in, nor should they.

ARD/VNC/Timbuktu let you remotely login, but you are remotely controlling
the server. Anyone sitting at the keyboard is going to know you are doing
this, because you can take control of the mouse. You can view their actions
on the screen. I guarantee you that a hundred people trying to log in with
ARD are going to have a VERY different experience than a hundred people
loggin in via X11 or Citrix.

Remote display != Remote Control, and that's an *important* distinction.
