If you move mcx.loginplugin out of the way:

sudo mv /System/Library/LoginPlugins/MCX.loginPlugin ~

and reboot, does the machine still crash on login? This defeats the purpose, really, since the WGM (mcx) settings won't work. But it could help narrow things down.
